An exciting feature of ornamental gardens is the garden pond: it creates a microclimate in our six gardens and serves as an oasis for birds. When designing it, we must strive for balance. Water warms up more slowly than air, so we recommend planting aquatic plants in April or May. Aquatic plants require a specialised growing medium. It is important that it is not excessively clayey and does not contain organic matter (tree branches, other plant fibres). Important! Avoid using standard potting compost, as it is not designed for a constantly moist environment.
It does matter what quality of potting compost you buy. Choose certified quality!

Aquatic plant soil for planting aquatic and marsh plants (e.g. water lilies, irises, cattails, reeds, water hyacinths, arrowhead).
Clay, river sand, Sphagnum peat, composted cattle manure, lowland peat

Once the garden pond has been constructed, place a mound of soil in the deepest part of the pond, position the plant to be planted on top, then spread the aquatic plant soil over it from the centre outwards, and finally compact the soil. When planting in a plant basket, place a layer of soil at the bottom of the container, place the plant inside, then fill it up and gently compact the soil. You can place small stones or gravel on top of the soil as a decorative feature and to prevent the plant from floating to the surface. Once the plants have been planted, you can carefully begin filling the pond with water. Remove any debris that floats to the surface. Aquatic plants do not require any additional nutrients.
