Cacti are undemanding plants; they can establish themselves even in harsh conditions and in places with poor nutrient levels. It is true that under such conditions they grow slowly and take a long time to develop the habit and appearance characteristic of their species. Under well-tended conditions, however, they develop rapidly and take less time to grow.
Most species require soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5).
When repotting, hold the plant with gloves on, lift it out of the pot and loosen the root ball. Repot the plant, then firm down the soil. You can decorate the surface with pebbles or crushed stone (non-calcareous). Wait 3–4 days before starting to water sparingly. After 4–6 weeks, fertilise with a special cactus fertiliser. Avoid overwatering.
It does matter what quality of potting compost you buy. Choose certified quality!
