A loose-textured, brown-coloured growing medium, free from any foreign odours. Its nutrient content and aeration are ideal for citrus plants.

Young citrus plants are usually planted in smaller pots or tubs to make them easier to transport. It is not advisable to continue growing them in these containers; they must therefore be repotted. For similar reasons, the root systems of plants with a root ball are also more compact and less extensive. 

After lifting our citrus plant, remove the outer few centimetres of the root ball’s surface using a blunt tool. Prune back any broken or split roots to encourage the plant to form new roots. If the root system of our citrus plant has densely permeated the soil, we can repot it at any time of year. However, the most favourable time is in early spring, around February and March, when the citrus plant is about to start sprouting.

Our general recommendations for potting soils and growing media containing wood fibre:

• When planting, it is advisable to mix perlite into the soil to improve water retention.
• To ensure an adequate supply of nutrients, it is advisable to use organic or mineral fertiliser at the time of planting, even if this means changing our previous practice. In a fibrous growing medium, particular attention must be paid to the plants’ nitrogen supply.
• Options for replenishing nutrients:
  • Fertiliser solution: Apply every 1–2 weeks, or regularly in smaller doses mixed with the watering water. Don’t neglect your plant – keep an eye on its growth!
  • fertiliser stick: placed near the root zone, it ensures a continuous supply of nutrients.
    The two approaches can be combined, but they should be used in moderation.
• Extra care is required when watering:
  • the medium may dry out more quickly
  • The surface may appear dry, whilst it is still damp underneath, so always check the deeper layers of the soil as well

It does matter what quality of potting compost you buy. Choose certified quality!
