A brown-coloured, loose-textured growing medium
One of the secrets to successfully caring for rhododendrons is using the right growing medium. Rhododendrons prefer acidic (pH 4.2–5.5) soil that retains moisture well and is rich in organic matter.
When repotting, moisten the potting mix, then plant the shrub in a pot 2–5 cm larger than the original one. When planting a shrub, dig a hole 40–50 cm deep to ensure that water does not collect around the roots. Place pieces of pottery or clay granules at the bottom, followed by a layer of potting compost. Place the plant in the hole, then fill in around it with rhododendron potting compost and water thoroughly to settle the soil. You can add pine bark to the top of the soil to protect the plant from drying out. After 4–6 weeks, we recommend applying a fertiliser suitable for this type of plant.
